Volunteer Opportunity: Graphic Designer

Strawberry Poison Dart Frog Art

Introduction

SAVE THE FROGS! seeks an experienced graphic designer to assist in our marketing campaigns and in creating frog-themed merchandise and educational materials. The frog loving graphic designer would work directly with SAVE THE FROGS! staff to create eye-catching digital and printed materials that would get viewed by and inspire frog enthusiasts around the world.

SAVE THE FROGS! volunteer graphic designers can be based anywhere in the world and must be willing to connect via video conference to discuss, edit and improve their graphic designs. Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and/or InDesign is essential. There are no minimum hours per week; rather, we would contact you as projects come up to see if you can assist.

“I always loved animals since I was a little kid, and was so captivated by all the different species there were in the world. As I grew up, I saw that climate change, pollution, and deforestation were destroying ecosystems, and I want to be a part of the movement that stops it. I’d love to volunteer at SAVE THE FROGS! because I think it’ll really make a change in the world, and not just stand idle.”
— Randy Gan, Graphic Designer, California

“My overall experience working with SAVE THE FROGS! has been wonderful. I first got involved because my son asked me to … now I’m involved because I feel passionate about this cause. Dr. Kriger works so hard to spread the word and I want to help be a part of it.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What format do you prefer for designs (eg. pdf, svg, png)?

Create using your favorite program. For draft versions, just send us low resolution jpegs. When your design is final, please send a hi-res jpeg and the native file if possible (e.g. .ai.psd, .indd). If you have a choice of creating in Illustrator or Photoshop, we prefer Illustrator.

What kind of design work do volunteers create (e.g. posters, postcards, brochures, stickers, etc.)?

We have a lot of projects, and they generally differ. Most often, we just need simple graphics to promote our programs. Sometimes we need posters, magazines, brochures, merchandise.

What dimensions should images be?

Unless otherwise directed, you should create at 2000x1500px. Once that design is final, then create a square 1080x1080px version for Instagram and a 540x960px version for stories.

Can I create my own frog art or use my own amphibian photos in the designs?

For any projects, you are always welcome to create your own frog imagery. Alternatively, we can provide you with frog art or photos. You can source photos from anywhere so long as we will have the rights to use the imagery without attribution (e.g. from a site like Envato Elements or Unsplash). Do not ever use any imagery that we will not be authorized to use.

Does SAVE THE FROGS! have a Brand Guide?

Yes, and we provide it to approved graphic design volunteers.

Should I use RGB or CMYK?

Anything destined for the web should be RGB (or HSL). If the goal is to print it, then go with CMYK.

How large should images be?

Aim for:
2000x1500px – 300KB
1080x1080px – 200KB
540x960px – 150KB
The goal is that nothing looks pixelated.
