A Venture To Engage The Next Generation In Raising Awareness About Amphibians

SAVE THE FROGS! India celebrated Save The Frogs Day in 2022 at the Tapan Theatre in Kolkata, West Bengal. More than 100 participants from eleven renowned colleges participated in an oral presentation competition. The theme was the importance of awareness programs in conserving amphibians.

We wanted the venture to continue and wished to engage the participants to have hands-on experience on the topic of their presentations. As such, we invited all the participating colleges to get involved in the “Junior Frog Squad” venture.

Students of Rahara Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Centenary College (RKMVCC Autonomous) and Behala College responded. The students created their own logos and social channels, and planned their programs. On March 18, 2023 we visited RKMVCC to listen to their ventures. They have been able to create a buzz in different districts of West Bengal through their effort.

Concluding Program At RMVCC

Nine students of RKMVCC named themselves as ‘Team Frog’ and prepared a flyer called “KGF: Knowledge Gaining On Frogs”. The flyer contains information and questions, the answers of which can be obtained by scanning a barcode given on the flyer. They distributed it among students of different schools across West Bengal. They conducted an essay competition, debate, and elocution, and received enormous response.

On Biodiversity Day, they gave a speech at the Zoological Survey of India. They participated in an environmental fair and addressed the masses. They prepared a frog friendly sustainable model, which was awarded first prize in an inter-college competition. They created frog origami and wrote messages on them. They have shared flyers and information on social platforms to reach out to more people.

Tale of a Bengali Frog’ – a documentary by Dr. Jyotirmay Deb was screened and the students had an interaction with the director. The students were felicitated. They have initiated a commendable venture and we are happy to pass on the baton to the next generation.
